Trachoma is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. More than 1.9 million people have lost their eyesight due to trachoma. The Tigray region with 5.4 million inhabitants is particularly affected. There, the infection rate is 26%, which means that 1.4 million people are at risk of going blind. Tragically children are most affected.
LIGHT FOR THE WORLD is an international organisation whose vision is an inclusive society where no one is left behind, striving for accessible eye care services and supporting inclusive education, empowering persons with disabilities to participate equally in society.
Thanks to financial aid, one of the most modern public eye clinics in Mozambique was able to open its doors in 2019. The clinic serves as a reference clinic for 7 million people in central Mozambique.
The first commemoration day of tropical diseases (World NTD Day) will take place on January 30th 2020. This new annual World NTD Day is intended to draw attention to the problem of NTDs (neglected tropical diseases), which include the eye disease trachoma. The WHO wants to eradicate the so-called "neglected tropical diseases" by 2030 and PREMIUM Immobilien is making a significant contribution to this goal.
